BCS Bowl Trends Alright! We’re into the meat of college football’s bowl schedule.

The NCAA will ring off 2010 with two BCS bowl games on New Year’s Day.

The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes will battle it out with the No. 7 Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl at Pasadena and the No. 3 Cincinnati Bearcats will go head to head with the No. 5 Florida Gators in the Sugar Bowl under the Superdome in Louisiana.

Rose Bowl:

In “The Granddaddy of Them All,” online sportsbooks have the Ohio State Buckeyes as 5-point underdogs with a Total set at 50.5.

OSU fans are only too aware of this, but for everyone else we need to note that the Buckeyes haven’t won a bowl game in the past three seasons, going 0-3 straight up.

Ohio State could have trouble ending the three-bowl game losing streak, as starting QB Terrelle Pryor is banged up.

According to a Dec. 30 report from the Los Angeles Times, Pryor is suffering from a partially torn ligament in his left knee and it is still bothering him despite the fact the team hasn’t seen action in about a month and a half.

Still, the Buckeyes have been hot in their past 20 games overall, going 15-5 against the spread, cashing in very nicely for their backers. Also worth noting is that in their last 11 games against Pac-10 opposition, they’ve been a very profitable 9-2 ATS.

Looking at the Total, in Ohio State’s last seven games in January, the Over has prevailed five times. Oregon has a record of 8 Overs and 2 Unders in their last 10 games overall, including six straight Overs.

In the Ducks’ last nine games when favored by 6-points or less, they are 6-3 ATS.

SPORTSBETTING.com is reporting pretty balanced action on this matchup, with 56% favoring Oregon so far.

Sugar Bowl

Florida had its sights set on defending its BCS title the week after New Years but lost to Alabama in the SEC title game and had to settle for the Sugar Bowl against Cincy instead.

The Gators are big 13-point Sugar Bowl favorites but things aren’t rosy for the boys from the Swamp.

It was revealed recently that head coach Urban Meyer, the man who lead the program to national titles in the 2006 and 2008 seasons, will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the team after the Jan. 1 bowl game.

Meyer was said to be suffering chest pains after the team’s SEC championship loss, resulting in the announcement. Bettors are going to have to factor in the “win one for the Meyer-meister approach” going into the bowl game against Cincinnati.

The Bearcats also had a coaching loss to deal with, although under entirely different circumstances. Bearcats head coach Brian Kelly left Cincinnati for Notre Dame earlier in December — offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn will coach the team in the Sugar Bowl.

Unlike Florida, Cincinnati will be looking to win in order to spite deserter Kelly.

The Total for the Sugar Bowl is set at 57. In the Gators’ last seven games in the month of January, they have produced 6 Overs and 1 Under.

In Cincinnati’s last 15 games when listed as an underdog of any line range, they are 12-3 ATS.

Enjoy all the bowl games on New Year’s Eve day and of course, on New Year’s Day.

Happy New Year.
