Betting on Super Bowl props is as much a part of the game as picking the side and total.
The difference is that sportsbooks only list two teams to win: Green Bay or Pittsburgh, while online prop betting options range into the hundreds, and for sports bettors looking for action the fun begins with Super Bowl XLV -- Celebrity Props.
How long will it take Christina Aguilera to sing the National Anthem?:
Over/Under: 1 minute 50 seconds
Aguilera has sung the anthem publicly/professionally 10 times, including a playoff game for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992. That rendition took 1 minute, 37 seconds but the way she hits the high notes Sunday should easily put this into the "two's".
Pick: Take the Over
PLAYER PROPS:
Once the game begins its time to focus on player props and with Pittsburgh's No. 1 rush defense, the best place to start is with James Starks vs. Rashard Mendenhall -- Most Rushing Yards.
Starks came on strong in the Wild Card round, more than doubling his season total with 123 rushing yards against Philadelphia. Since then he's rushed for 66 yards and 74 yards but the Steelers led the league in fewest yards per carry (3.0) and fewest rushing attempts per game (20.8).
Do the math and Starks should expect roughly 15 carries for 60 yards. Mendenhall (-30.5, -140) only rushed for more than 90 yards six times in 18 games this year (and once in the past four).
Books are paying back at plus-money on Starks in this game and charging highway robbery for Mendenhall but in case they forgot, Green Bay has a stout run-D as well.
Pick: Take Starks (+30.5 yards)
GAME PROPS:
Popular contest props like "Shortest TD of game" O/U 1.5 yards have been juiced to the max and the "Under" play, which wins 80-percent of the time, costs -145: too much! Instead, get creative and play for a prop with a positive payback: Will the LAST team to score win the game?
Four Super Bowls in the past decade have ended with a three point margin of victory and the pointspread in this game represents how closely these teams matchup. That said, defense is what wins championships and Pittsburgh (14.5) scored a half-point better than the Packers (15.0) in the "Fewest points allowed" category.
The anticlimactic, defensive stand play pays back at a generous +180 and that's the top prop pick for Super Bowl XLV.
