When the New York Knicks played host to the Miami Heat last month (Dec. 17), online sportsbooks listed New York as a five-point underdog and the Knicks were blasted for 113 points, losing by 22.
New York started its recent two-game road trip with a rematch against the Heat, losing once again but netting bettors a cover against the spread before following it up with a loss at Orlando.
Since then the Knicks have gotten past Indiana, losing ATS, and now New York is back in the exact same position they found themselves in two weeks ago: Five-point home dogs against a superior foe.
SAN ANTONIO SPURS AT NEW YORK KNICKS
Line: Spurs -5
Over/Under: 207.5
NEW YORK MINUTE
New York is 8-0 ATS in its past eight matchups vs. teams from the Western Conference including thee-straight home wins vs. the Thunder, Nuggets, and Timberwolves. The common theme, however, is that the Knicks were favored in these matchups and the combined record for the clubs is 51-51 (.500).
If the Knicks are to continue on their current ‘win one, lose one’ pace, it will accomplish one goal for the season -- a berth in the playoffs. But the one-way ticket it writes this squad to the sofa where it can watch real teams compete will come faster than the pink slip did for Eric Mangini in Cleveland.
HOW THE WEST WAS WON
The Knicks only West Coast tour of the season offered predictable results: Four-straight ATS wins against some of the worst basketball teams in the league. The combined record of the four teams was 49-82 (.374 win percentage).
San Antonio (29-4) leads the entire league for overall wins and fewest road losses (2) and the Spurs have an impressive 8-2-1 ATS record vs. teams from the East but NBA odds for this contest are low for a reason.
NBA PICKS
The Spurs have been performing at a high level since getting blown out against the Magic recently (Dec. 23) and while we do see Orlando winning this game straight-up, playing this game to go high looks like a stronger bet.
Betting odds for this matchup opened at 208 and have come off by a half-point. In a contest where the home side has to show it can compete with upper level clubs, we suggest playing this game to sail "Over" the posted total.
