NFL Futures Betting: Post-Draft

The debates still rage on... Tebow should never have been picked in the first round, how could the Bills pass on Clausen, Bradford is another David Carr, and on and on.
Last week’s NFL Draft provided fans and sports bettors alike a mid-spring NFL fix and the opportunity to talk football. Online sportsbooks also got into the game, posting up a ton of betting options focused on the three-day event.
Talking to manager Brian Taylor from sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.com, he stated their book took in more NFL Draft volume this year than in any previous season. It looks like bettors did well on the Sam Bradford picks, as he was a heavy favorite to be picked first overall and the St. Louis Rams made sure they all got paid when they grabbed him with that first selection.
Taylor stated, “On the prop of whether Bradford would be taken first overall, the “Yes” option basically got all the volume. Bettors were pretty sure he was going to the Rams and they were right”.
Another popular one was whether Tim Tebow would go in the first round or not. Taylor said, “lots of attention on Tebow prop betting offers heading into this one. It was a great storyline and bettors responded to the intrigue around him. The action was heavier on that he wouldn’t be drafted in the first round, with only about 35% of all the volume we took cashing tickets when he went 25th to Denver.”
Looking at how the draft might impact on the NFL future odds betting, it appears Seattle certainly improved right away. A number of draft pundits liked the crop of players the Seahawks selected, with ESPN giving them a draft grade of A.
Sportsbooks currently have the Seahawks at +4000 to win the NFC championship, while they are +7200 to capture a Super Bowl this coming season. Truthfully, no matter what happened in the draft, those are two trophies this team is very unlikely to capture. But they might be worth a shot to win the NFC West.
The Seattle Seahawks are a pick’em for their Week 1 regular season matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
Year in and year out it seems that Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome fills his team with quality draft picks and according to many, Newsome and his war room did it again.
The Ravens traded down with the Denver Broncos — the Broncos took Tebow with the pick — and Baltimore took a linebacker many thought had first-round talent in the second-round in Texas LB Sergio Kindle.
With the Ravens’ other second-rounder, they took NT Terrence Cody from Alabama.
“The second-round additions of outside linebacker Sergio Kindle and nose tackle Terrence Cody should help the Ravens' aging groups on the defensive line and at linebacker,” said Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun.
The Baltimore Ravens are prospective 3-point underdogs for their Week 1 Monday night matchup against the New York Jets and are +700 faves to take the AFC championship and +1500 for the Super Bowl.
Believe it or not, Al Davis, the NFL’s version of grandpa Simpson, and his Oakland Raiders fared well in this year’s draft, at least initially.
The team actually selected a player deemed one of the best available in Alabama LB Rolando McClain.
As Jarrett Bell of USA Today said, “The franchise broke tradition and didn't spring bizarre moves from left field.”
On a related note and according to numerous reports, JaMarcus Russell, taken first-overall by the Raiders in 2007, could be released by the team and is a perfect example of a draft pick that went dreadfully wrong.
Despite a well-graded draft, the Raiders are still longshots in a number of categories in 2010, including at +7500 to take the AFC title and +10,600 to win the Super Bowl.
