Judge NB Tuchten of the North Gautengh High Court in South Africa recently ruled on the jurisdictions of online gaming transactions.
Per the effect of the ruling, onling gaming companies that offer serivices to residents of South Africa, the people that advertise the services thereof (including both print media and affiliates), AS WELL AS SOUTH AFRICAN RESIDENTS GAMBLING AT ONLINE ESTABLISHMENTS are in violation of South African law.
Turning citizens/residents into criminals for entertaining themselves in their own homes in a manner that doesn't harm anyone else (except, of course for the State racket, since they don't get a piece of the loot) not enough for you?
The ruling also makes Internet Service Providers responsible, so basically if ISPs don't censor the internet, they become criminals as well.
The penalty specified for violation is a fine of up to R10 million and/or up 10 years in prison.
Such a blatant disregard for the rights of individuals to pursue happiness in whatever way they choose (as long as they don't interfer with the rights of others to do the same) is a good reason not to live in South Africa (which ironically, had been considered by many to be a choice retirement/expatriate destination... that is, up until now).
